Luke 23.46-47 – Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!”
If the centurion didn’t believe that Jesus was a substitutionary sacrifice suffering the wrath of God against his sin, then his response is nonsensical. Why in the world would he praise God at the death of Christ and declare that Christ was innocent? Is he happy that injustice has been done and he is thanking God for it? Does he not care that he was part of an execution of an innocent man?
Only one view fits the passage without making the centurion out to be a nutter. Pretty good theology for a brand new christian.
